Residency and Citizenship
Although we do not provide immigration service at Four Flags Journal, we are happy to help you to find competent attorneys when we know who they are. The lawyers we recommend have provided articles that set forth the requirements for immigration into the country. You can find those articles here:

Hi, since you didn’t give the country of your citizenship we can’t really tell you much. We are not able to help anyone from the Middle East right now unless you already have someone in Uruguay who is a citizen and is willing to sponsor you, such as a relative or friend.
Hello,
If I get a student visa to study in Argentina, does that allow me to gain citizenship after 2 years of studying at the university there? Or do I need to establish permanent residency first?
Also, while I study in Argentina, do I need to get a job to show that I can support myself or is the money from my parents acceptable?
Thanks
Hi, Anna, thank you for contacting us. In answer to your questions
1. Yes students can apply for citizenship after 2 years.
2. Yes money from parents is acceptable.
3. No you don’t need to work in Arg while studying.
Hope this helps. See you in Argentina! 🙂
Dear Arlean, thank you for all the replies you have posted. I am from the USA, currently living in the Philippines but planning to move to Argentina for at least 6 months a year in order to establish my residency there and apply for citizenship. I think/hope you are the same Arlene who posted on BAEXPATS a few years back when you received your own citizenship using Attorney Gabriel (not sure on last name either Celano or Cerano). I would like to ask three things if possible, First and foremost, the best attorney you can recommend, Secondly, good suggestions for housing/apartment rental sites that have current pricing, and Lastly, a recommendation for the best cell phone carrier. Any help would be SO much appreciated. Thank you in advance, Steven
Hi Steven, First, you are more than welcome. It’s our pleasure! Next, not only the best lawyer but the ONLY one we recommend in Argentina is Gabriel Celano. He will do a fantastic job. We’ve recommended him for years without a single complaint and plenty of rave reviews. If you go to the web site and click on Argentina on the left, you will find articles by Gabriel about the requirements for citizenship. We really don’t have any information for you about housing. When we moved to Argentina we stayed in a hostel and answered ads in the newspaper. Palermo, Belgrano, Ricoleta are three really good areas to look but not the only ones. We are located in Palermo. When you are ready to come, if you have more questions about where to look we are happy to help you. For cell phone the ones we know about are as follows: I have an old cell phone that uses chips. It was AT&T in the U.S, and we unlocked it and have a chip for Chile, Argentina and Uruguay and change chips as needed. You do not give anyone personal information, you have a phone number and just go to a kiosk, give them your number and they add time whenever you need it. It is a little more expensive than a plan from a phone service. For monthly phone service, as far as we know Telecom is best. Let us know if you need more help.
Hello Ms. Kelley,
Thank you for sharing your experience with the Argentine citizenship process, I found your blog to be very informative and helpful. I do have some questions regarding moving to Argentina as I will be doing so in mid-February of 2017.
I know that I require a pre-arrival visa since I have a Bangladeshi passport but I am unclear on which category of visa to apply for( http://www.cancilleria.gov.ar/asistencia-consular/tr%C3%A1mites-para-extranjeros ).
I plan on teaching English(I am a certified CELTA instructor) while living in Buenos Aires for 6 months at a stretch during the first year and in the second year I will have to divide the 6 months in 2-3 parts. Initially, I will most possibly be employed by a language institution, while also providing private tuition.
I will be 20 years old at the time of my departure, and will be attending the final year of my undergraduate studies online during my time in Argentina.
Based on my current situation with the visa requirement, do you suggest the tourism visa or the temporary resident visa, and if the latter then which subcategory do you think my case would fall under? I have heard that it is very difficult to obtain a resident visa -especially from this part of the world- and that most teachers/volunteers use the tourism visa to teach and work, do you think that it is a viable option? Also, in this particular case, would I need a local sponser?
If I do as mentioned before (living 6 months in year-1 and 6 months separately in year-2 while teaching) will my time in Argentina on the tourism visa count towards the citizenship requirement?
There are no Argentine embassies or consulates in Bangladesh, so I’d have to travel to India to take care of all the paperwork and since it’s far away I’d like to get everything in order beforehand. And so, I require your help and it would be a tremendous favor to me.
I would greatly appreciate your feedback on these matters and I thank you for your time.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks again and
Best Regards,
Arya
Arya, I have referred your letter to our favorite attorney. We are not sure about the requirements for someone from Bangladesh. You should hear from him and he will send me a copy. Let us know if you need more help.
Arya, in response to your question, since your citizenship is Bangladesh:
1. to enter Argentina you needs to try to obtain a tourist visa
2. if you plan to work you need a relative in the country or someone you know who can sponsor you.
3. If you can show a substantial sum on deposit in a bank that can guarantee your livelihood here, there is a possibility.
hi
what are the requirements of Paraguay and uryguay residency for Pakistanis. pls elaborate
thanks
Hi Waheed, we are informed that it is very difficult for Middle East citizens to enter Paraguay. At present me have no attorney to recommend in Paraguay. As for Uruguay, you would need a relative or friend living in Uruguay who would sponsor you, or be the child of a Uruguayan parent. For more information, if you go to the web site and click on Uruguay on the left you can find requirements for immigration by Mark Teuten, the attorney we recommend in Uruguay.
Hello, what a great website. I wanted to ask ‘ and forgive me if this has already been answered elsewhere. My father is Argentinian and lives in Argentina. MY mother is English. I have British Citizenship and I am 34 years old. What do i need to do to obtain to Citizenship? I believe that I would have to stay there for two years and then apply? Or is there a different way?
Thank you
Ben
Hi Benjamin, with an Argentine parent, that is qualification enough but you would need to be in Argentina for at least 6 months of each year. You would then be eligible to apply after two years. If you have spent time in Argentina before, it is possible that could apply–but we’d have to check to be sure.
Hi Arlean,
I am 18 years old Yemeni Citizen currently living in Saudi Arabia , and i’ve been thinking about moving to argentina in order to get the Argentinian Citizinship.
My Questions are :
What type of visa should i apply for?
How much this whole process whould cost me ?
After i’m there should i apply directly after i arrive there or wait 2 years in order to apply for citizenship ?
Thanks in Advance
Hi Alaa, You would need to have a relative or someone you know in the country to act as your sponsor. You would come on a visitor’s visa, apply for residency when you arrive and two years after your arrival you would be eligible to apply for citizenship. If you have a sponsor, feel free to get back with u s and we will help you all we can.
Hi I would like to know what the process is to be a permanent resident in Uruguay. My husband was born in Montevideo but is now a US citizen. We have been married over 20 yrs and are thinking of relocating to Uruguay. Also we have two adult children who would also like to relocate. What is the process for them ? Thank you for your assistance
Since your husband was born in Montevideo, and assuming he can document it, you are all eligible for residency and citizenship in Uruguay. We suggest you contact our recommended attorney Mark Teuten. You may contact Dr Teuten at

Hello, my name is Bilal from Algeria i live in Malaysia but i want to emigrate to Argentina , or Paraguay to apply for citizenship , which country you recommend for me ?
can you help me to obtain my citizenship in Argentina or Paraguay ?how much it cost please contact me to me email thank you
Dear Sirs,
I’m Egyptian, and I heard Uruguay doesn’t provide citizenship to Arabs, or Middle Easterns (which fits my case). Is it true? Also, I would need to know if I need a sponsor or not.
Your feedback is highly appreciated.
Youssef.
Hi Youssef, In Uruguay anyone (whether Egyptian or not) who needs a visa to come to Uruguay does need a sponsor inside the country. If you have a sponsor and can meet other requirements–which really aren’t difficult–then you can get citizenship.
Hi Arlean,
I am a Palestinian citizen and I’m seriously thinking of moving to Argentina to settle there. I haven’t yet started anything or any paperwork because I have a lot of questions in mind that I need to make sure of. If it’s possible, I’d surely appreciate your help with these to remove any doubts out of my mind.
1. How many years do I need to physically be in Argentina in order to obtain the citizenship?
2. If I got to marry there with an Argentinian citizen, how many years does it take to obtain the citizenship?
3. How much, in lawyer fees, does it approximately take to get the citizenship?
These are some of the questions that I had and I would love if you can address them with detail as much as you can.
Thanks you!
Hi Yaz, I just checked a list of countries requiring a visa to enter Argentina and if your passport is Palestine you do need a visa. Therefore, for you to come into Argentina and stay, you would need a sponsor in the country. We can’t help you with that. You would need to know someone here to sponsor you. If you can meet that requirement, please let us know and we will be more than glad to do all we can to help you. If you can’t do that, we had one man who tried everything until he finally, along with his wife and daughter, got admission to Ecuador. At the end of the year, they will be citizens and then plan to come to Argentina. So sometimes there are ways. His family is from India. Wishing you the best of luck. Arlean
Hi, I would like to ask if a requirement of 2 years residence in Argentina in order to gain citizenship means that I MUST be physically present in Argentina for 2 years? Are there any way to fulfill this requirement without physical presence?
I am looking forward to hearing from you
Thanks,
Hi Chris, you do need to live in Argentina. They want people who have an interest in the country, as you can understand. But you don’t have to be here all the time. You can come and go as long as you are in the country at least six months of every year.
Hello
I am a single Lebanese 43 year old holding a masters in international law and would like to know what would it take to become an Argentinian citizen.
What I am concerned about is my inability at the time being to stay for an uninterrupted two years in the country so my question is how do the courts over there calculate the minimum physical presence time required and are there any cases where it can be reduced?
Thank you for your time
Hi George, the rule is that you have to be in the country a total of six months. It doesn’t have to be a straight six months. Like you can come and go if you have business outside but just be careful not to be away more than six months. They’re really careful about the six months inside the country.
Hello.I am iranian,42 years old, married with a child,7 years old son.I am a writer,Novelist, screenwriter and medical laboratory technician.I want ask question you,how is it possible immigration to Uruguay for my family. Please guide me.Thank you so much.Sincerely
Hi, one thing that an Iranian needs in Uruguay, along with meeting other requirements, is that you would need a friend or family member in Uruguay who would be willing to sponsor you in Uruguay.
Trying to move to Paraguay. Would like any information concerning this process.
Thanks!
Hi Kressant, as we have suggested to others, we think you would find help on the Paraguay forum http://www.totalparaguay.com. There are quite a few expats there who have been through the process. Good luck!
